Sky Dome

A sky dome is a method used to create an environment that surrounds the entire game world. The sky dome is essentially a large sphere that encompasses the game level and displays the skybox texture.

Sky domes are used to project far-off details like the sky, distant mountains, or surrounding scenery, using a technique called a skybox. This skybox is essentially a 360-degree background image that's always "behind" everything else in your game world.

Sky domes provide a realistic horizon line and can prevent some of the distortion you might get at the top of a skybox.

The sky dome is generally centered around the player's position and moves with the player, giving the illusion that the sky is infinitely far away, as it appears in real life.

The sky dome itself is not an object that can be interacted with in the game; it's simply a method to create a more immersive environment for the player.

Add a Sky Dome to a Map

  1. Begin with a map open in World Editor.
  2. In Asset Browser, find the sky dome models by going to: model files/art/skies/models/basic/[SELECT A SKY DOME].
info

There are full sphere, half dome, and quarter dome models in Asset Browser.

  1. Drag the sky dome asset into the World Editor and place it over your map.
  2. Select the sky dome model and press W to bring up the movement widget.
  3. Resize and move the sky dome as needed for your map.

Edit a Sky Dome

  1. With the sky dome selected, open Entity Inspector.
  2. From here you can change parameters as you wish and preview in World Camera.
  • Optional: You can use Material remap to add a different skybox material to the sky dome model.
info

Environment settings (things like sun, light, fog, etc.) are not part of the sky dome and must be edited in the environment decl in the Environment Editor.

  1. Save and rebuild to test your sky dome.
