About Decls

The term decl is derived from the word "declaration." Decls are text files that represent code objects within the game, and are directly correlated with the C++ code for the game. The Decl Editor displays all available variables for any code object that can be loaded in the game. The base decl sets the initial values of these variables, but these variables can be easily customized to match your preferences and needs by making changes to the decl in the Decl Editor. Decls are commonly used to define entities, models, materials, and other objects in the game, but are also utilized to establish object behavior, such as that of weapons or particle systems, and as such, you can think of decls as simply generic data used in the game. Decls are pervasive throughout all aspects of the id Tech game engine.
