idStudio Asset Packs
The mods enabled version of idStudio runs on WAD7 file containers called Asset Packs. By default idStudio comes with the common wad set which contains enough files to get started. Additional asset packs can be obtained using the DOOM Eternal Launcher. (see here for more details)
Because idTech's resource system centers around packaging maps, the majority of assets are bundled into map specific wads.
Version 1.0.0 Asset Packs (Deprecated)
V1 refers to the initial release of the following asset packs.
- Common wad
- Base campaign wads
- DLC1 wads
- DLC2 wads
- PVP wads
- Horde mode wads
These wads were released at QuakeCon 2024
Version 2.0.0 Asset Packs
In order to use V2 map based wads you will need to download the V2 Base Map Resources asset pack first. Without this pack you will run into dependency issues when trying to load resources in idStudio.
V2 refers to a repackaging of the V1 assets to achieve multiple improvements in working with the large data set.
- Reduce initial install size for idStudio from 100GB to 66GB
- Reduce total install size (with optional asset packs) for idStudio from 650GB to 450GB
- Reduce overall redundancy of resources among map wads
- Chunk wad7 at a preset size for better download management (5GB chunk target)
- Allow for easier content patching on block based transfer systems
- Fix resource dependency issues present in V1 wads
- Introduce a content database to track both local and remote content
- Allow for the remaining warehouse items to be shipped as their own wads outside of maps
- Improve idStudio startup times by 20%
Which should you use?
New Users
If you are starting with a fresh install of idStudio it is recommended to use V2. V1 packs will remain available for existing creators but are considered deprecated.
Existing V1 Users
You may continue to use V1 asset packs. Note that as of February 11, 2026 V1 common wad will no longer be available. It will be replaced with its V2 version. However, V1 and V2 packs are compatible with each other. You may mix and match them as you so choose.
It is recommended that you eventually transition over to using V2 as you have time. However, there is currently no set time to retire V1.
How will this affect my mods?
The TLDR is it won't. The wads are simply containers of files. If you have all the files you need at the time of mod packaging then there's no difference to the end user. Any mods which were published using V1 packs will remain compatible without the need to update or republish.
